INWIND is an environmental art installation that combines high performance kite-making with advanced digital fabrication. Deployed at St Kilda Beach, the 12-metre-long air structure acts to materialise the dynamic conditions of the twilight hour and present them as spectacle for a surrounding audience.
As a soft-shell structure, INWIND required an economy of thought and process where no part could afford to be extraneous to its performative function. The project took advantage of computational generative design methods for the purposes of iterative form-finding and fabrication preparation. This was done by physically testing iterations and adjusting the algorithmic process to reflect the observed conditions. As a result, INWIND lends itself to fabrication because it is scalable in terms of complexity while retaining a hierarchy and modularity of form.
